Virginia Security Guard – What They Do and How to Get a Job as One

When most people of think of protection, the first thing that pops into their head is the police. And it is perfectly fine to think that, as police officers are a great asset in helping to protect the countries citizens from harm. But we sometimes forget that there is also another group of people who do many of the same basic tasks that police officers do, yet they often do not get the same amount of recognition. The main difference between the two is that while police officers are employed by the state and paid for by state taxes, security guards typically work for a private company.

A Virginia security guard is an officer in uniform and is typically given the task to protect property, people and other various assets. They accomplish this by a number of different ways, including guarding something directly, patrolling the area, using an alarm system, or by watching via surveillance equipment. When they see something suspicious or witness a crime, then they have to report it to local law enforcement as they do not have the authority to deal with it themselves. While they may not have the same legal power that police officers do, they are still putting their life on the line in the name of protection.

During the Middle Ages in Europe, a security guard would have been called a watchman. That term was later adopted in the United States where it became night watchman, as many security guards are often times stationed at their post overnight. Most states require that security officers obtain a license and undergo a thorough training course before they can be stationed. A background check is also completed on individuals who wish to work in security. Most guards do not carry a weapon, however if they are required to carry one, then they must get a separate license for the weapon as well.

A Virginia security guard must obtain a license through the Department of Criminal Justice Services. They must complete 18 hours of in class training with a licensed teacher. They have to complete this training within 90 days of being hired by a security firm, and must renew their license every 2 years. In order to be licensed as an armed guard, they must complete another 16 hours of training with firearms, 6 hours of performing a proper citizen’s arrest, and be fit to handle the kind of weapon they will be using on the job.
